Chocolate contains methylxanthines — primarily theobromine and caffeine — which dogs metabolize much more slowly than humans. A dog's half-life for theobromine is approximately 17.5 hours, compared to 2-3 hours in humans, dramatically increasing toxicity risk.
Chocolate Type Matters (Theobromine Concentration)
- White chocolate: Negligible theobromine — unlikely to cause toxicity but may cause pancreatitis from fat content.
- Milk chocolate: ~1.5-2.0 mg/g theobromine. A 10 kg dog needs to eat ~100g for mild symptoms.
- Dark chocolate (70-85%): ~5-8 mg/g. A 10 kg dog needs only ~25-30g to reach toxic threshold.
- Baking chocolate / Cocoa powder: ~14-26 mg/g. A 10 kg dog needs as little as 8-15g — approximately one square of baker's chocolate.
Symptoms (Progressive)
Mild (20-40 mg/kg): Vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, restlessness. Moderate (40-60 mg/kg): Rapid heart rate (tachycardia), abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, hyperactivity. Severe (>60 mg/kg): Seizures, hyperthermia, coma, cardiac arrest. Symptoms typically appear within 6-12 hours and can last 24-72 hours due to the long half-life.
