Milk chocolate44-643-5 oz for mild signs
Dark chocolate (60-70%)130-4500.5-1.5 oz for moderate toxicity

Clinical Signs Timeline

Onset: 2-4 hours post-ingestion, but may be delayed up to 12 hours. Stage 1 (mild): vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, increased thirst, panting. Stage 2 (moderate): tachycardia, hypertension, muscle tremors, hyperactivity. Stage 3 (severe): cardiac arrhythmias, hyperthermia, seizures, coma. Death typically results from cardiac arrhythmia or respiratory failure.

Emergency Protocol

1. Identify chocolate type and estimate amount consumed. 2. Call ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435) or Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) — have the chocolate wrapper ready. 3. Do NOT induce vomiting at home without veterinary guidance — hydrogen peroxide can cause aspiration pneumonia if administered incorrectly. 4. Transport to veterinary ER. Treatment: emesis induction (apomorphine), activated charcoal (repeat dosing every 4-6 hours due to enterohepatic recirculation of theobromine), IV fluids, sedation for tremors, cardiac monitoring for 24-72 hours.

🚨 If Your Pet Has Been Exposed

DO NOT WAIT for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately. Have your pet's weight, the substance involved, estimated amount consumed, and time of ingestion ready. The risk calculator above is an educational estimate only — individual animal responses vary based on age, breed, pre-existing conditions, and concurrent substance ingestion.
